Start Here: Mobile Studio, Vignettes Offer AI Path for Manufacturers

Last updated on April 18th, 2025 at 09:53 am

It’s one thing to talk about new technology in manufacturing, but what does that look like in practice?

The reality is, each manufacturer is different, and so are AI-based solutions. To help companies learn more about Industry 4.0 technologies that best fit their needs, Georgia AIM supports the Georgia AIM Mobile Studio and technology vignettes developed by the University of Georgia College of Engineering.

The mobile studio and vignettes work together to connect with residents and manufacturers to help people understand how these technologies work, and how they can be implemented in manufacturing environments.

Georgia AIM Mobile Studio

The mobile studio is a 53-foot self-contained trailer outfitted with cutting-edge technology. It’s on wheels because it’s designed to take technology to the people— specifically, communities that may not have access to manufacturing and new technologies.

Key features of the Georgia AIM Mobile Studio include robotic arms, CNC printers, 3D printers, a robot dog, and drones. Each piece of technology was selected to provide hands-on learning, empowering participants to explore AI, robotics, and manufacturing in a safe, engaging, interactive environment.

The Georgia AIM Mobile Studio makes stops across the state, and may be requested for large events or manufacturer trainings. For more information, please visit the Mobile Studio website.

Technology Vignettes

The mobile studio includes select vignettes developed by the Innovation Factory lab at the UGA College of Engineering. These vignettes, which are self-contained, portable units featuring a specific technology, are also available for smaller events and functions. The lab, through support of Georgia AIM, is developing five specific vignettes that can be implemented on the mobile studio or shown independently:

  • 3D printing
  • Internet of things
  • Computer vision
  • Robots/cobots
  • Virtual reality/augmented reality

These vignettes can be brought to manufacturers across Georgia to help identify new opportunities to enhance their manufacturing process in a cost-efficient, practical way.

“AI is infused into each of these. AI is the brain behind computer vision, it can drive robots where they need to go, and it can live inside virtual reality. You can even speak to these systems and have it understand in any language you choose,” says Kyle Johnson, professor of engineering at the Innovation Factory at UGA. “Each vignette has immediate potential and shows what the technology is and how it can be used.”
